About the Internship

IMG_1472An internship with Up Beat Music Therapy offers a unique experience working with many different populations.  Interns spend a significant time alongside the Internship Director observing and co-leading group music therapy sessions in skilled nursing facilities, dementia units, inpatient psychiatric settings, and facilitating wellness groups in independent living facilities.

After orienting to the medical setting at Beverly Hospital, interns also gain independence co-leading and eventually working separately at bedside with adult patients suffering from respiratory and pulmonary illnesses, traumatic brain injury, infection, stroke, and various types of cancer, among other diagnoses.  In addition, our medical music therapy program includes bedside and small group sessions on the hospital’s small pediatric unit.

Interns receive feedback during individual and group supervision, and participate in discussions following group and individual sessions. The internship experience also includes a multitude of written assignments, readings, and clinical repertoire building experiences.  Interns are also expected to complete a case study or research project in their last three months, and start a pilot program either affiliated with the hospital, or in another location.

Prospective interns must have completed undergraduate coursework before starting an internship with Up Beat Music Therapy, and meet the criteria outlined in the application and contract.
